Greener packaging
We're constantly looking for new ways to reduce the amount of packaging we use, and strive to
follow 'reduce, reuse, recycle' principles. And we've changed the materials we use in our
carrier bags, too, so that they break down, naturally, faster.
Less litter
With a million customers a day, we have a big responsibility to reduce litter. We've worked with
over 50 Local Authorities over the last couple of years to tackle the problem – for example, only
giving carrier bags to customers who ask for them, which led to a 17% reduction.
We also make sure all our bags clearly ask customers to 'Please use a bin and Keep Britain Tidy',
have the Keep Britain Tidy logo in all our shops, and are involved in their 'Big Tidy Up' initiative.
Reducing waste
We're working hard to reduce the amount of waste we generate and, where waste does occur, find
alternative ways to dispose of it. For example, we donate some of our unsold food to local charities,
such as FareShare, when ever possible.
Climate change
We're involved in the Carbon Disclosure Project. It's widely regarded as the gold standard for
carbon disclosure methodology and process, and provides climate change data to the global market place.
