Profiles Darren, Supplies People Manager
"HR at Greggs is a big challenge. The business is a really good size to develop your skills, knowledge and experience – all reasons why I moved here from Tesco three years ago. I'd been there for some time, but as more of a HR generalist. Here at the Enfield bakery, it's a much more varied role with the opportunity to get involved in strategic projects.
I'm a people person
"What hasn't changed is my passion for people. When I first started working, I got
into customer service and quickly found myself in charge of a big team. People saw
that I enjoyed mentoring and developing my team, so I guess it's no surprise I moved
into HR.
"When I joined Greggs, I got lots of support towards my CIPD. But I still found it
tough to balance the demands of the job with studying. Especially as I have to visit
in-store bakeries as well as spend time in the main bakery – and manage my own
small team.
A job with two sides to it
"First, there's the people aspect, making sure we've the talent we need in our bakeries
and shops. And then there are the projects. I'll handle any number at one time. And
they could be about anything HR-related – putting together a leadership training
programme, developing a succession plan, looking at the business' long-term goals
in relation to our HR strategy. Literally anything.
"Right now, a lot of my focus is on making sure we can cope with our growth. At last
estimate, we'll be creating about 6,000 jobs over the next few years, so between me
and Vanessa, my equivalent in our Twickenham factory, we've got our work cut out. We
get along famously and share ideas, develop best practices and solve problems
together. But I get lots of support from across the business; I find everyone's
keen to help out.
"I do work nights occasionally, because I think it's important to know everyone –
those on the day and night shifts. It's quite tough, but it is exciting to see the
bakery in full flow at night.
"I also think the benefits are really good. Obviously, I'm well aware of what the
competition offers – and Greggs has a really good package. I'd be lying if I said
the idea of a discounted steak bake wasn't attractive too."
