About the role

Within the Platform Services Team (part of the IT and Business Change function) as our Platform and Infrastructure Specialist – Modern Infrastructure Lead, you will be responsible for assessing our current infrastructure, in conjunction with key stakeholders, the wider Platform Services team, and team and department leadership teams. This role will be designing and implementing a new technical model based heavily upon public cloud technologies with significant elements of hybrid. As such, you will have excellent technical knowledge of public cloud services, both implementation of new and migration of existing on premise workloads, not only from a technical perspective but also ensuring fundamental agility and cost efficiency is inherent throughout.


This role will also be key in driving the non-technical changes required to embrace cloud technologies most effectively – you will ideally have strong knowledge around Infrastructure as Code technologies, principles, and working practices. The ideal candidate would also have significant exposure to automation, CI/CD, and understanding of DevOps practices. A strong knowledge of containerisation approaches would also be highly beneficial.


It would be highly desirable for you to have had experience in the Microsoft 365 platform, particularly Identity Services – but most important is to understand where this platform fits within the wider public and hybrid cloud approach.


This role will also be responsible for ensuring continuity of current services during the strategic modernisation of our infrastructure, and will therefore require strong technical knowledge of on-premise technologies – including server virtualisation (VMWare), SAN (Nimble) and Windows Server OS.


To support this role and ensure its success in implementing a new modern infrastructure, this role will also have direct line management of a small team. This is a new team within the organisation, and this is an exciting opportunity to create a highly effective service with significant autonomy and support from the wider Platform Services Leadership Team.


£35,000 to £55,000 depending on experience

Work Pattern

Our normal working hours are Monday- Friday 9-5 but as a fast moving retail operation there may be time where you will be required to work outside of these hours. We understand that you may have commitments outside of work and can therefore offer a flexible approach to your working hours. 

Job Description

Technical Change

Play a key role in the Greggs IT & Business Change development by:

  • Contributing to architecting, design and implementation of infrastructure technical change across our core infrastructure, implementing a new Hybrid and public cloud model.
  • Ensuring that change is implemented in line with business needs and priorities and is clearly communicated with key stakeholders within and outside of IT to demonstrate business benefits.


Knowledge Leadership

Utilising the senior level of technical knowledge possessed, this role will be critical for ensuring:

  • Supporting cross skilling and transition of services across the wider IT team, including new non-technical approaches.
  • Creation of robust documentation and guidance suitable for various audiences, including detailed technical documentation for peers, technical process documentation to facilitate handover to support teams, and end user guidance documentation to support adoption.



Project Management

Whilst not directly a project management role, this role is key to ensuring timely and quality delivery of technical work and will work closely with both technical leads and project managers to ensure this. The post holder must be confident and clear in communicating with project stakeholders to ensure risks and issues are raised, and otherwise provide regular updates to ensure transparency across the project(s). This role will need to be self driven as the subject matter expert around our public cloud direction, and therefore there are times when various elements will not only require design and implementation, but project management around this.

Essential Skills

  • Expert knowledge in Azure Public Cloud technologies, and experience of designing and migrating on premise workloads into public cloud relating to core infrastructure.
  • Strong technical knowledge in on premise infrastructure, including virtualisation technologies and Windows architectures.
  • Very strong knowledge and experience around Powershell scripting.
  • Experience of using automation technologies, such as Azure Automation and Runbooks
  • Previous line management experience, or demonstrable examples of leadership regardless of reporting lines
  • Passionate technologist, able to confidently communicate technical change in a non-technical way to key stakeholders
  • Strong service skills and able to highlight and drive service improvements using technology
  • Confident in ensuring challenge to status quo and challenging existing working practices
  • Strong problem solving capabilities – both when resolving issues and incidents arising from project change, and in using technology to solve business challenges
